My mum was extremely fit and healthy, had stopped smoking, and went to the gym most days.
She started to feel unwell and it became unbearable with chest pains, she went to the hospital and they sent her home. This continued for a week and then she went back to the hospital, when she went back they said she was having heart attacks and would need a heart bypass operation.
This came as a massive shock to the entire family because of how healthy she was. While she was in hospital awaiting her operation she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease – a disease of the thyroid which we were told was very easy to live with and cure.
My mum had undergone her operation and we were told she was doing fine, what we didn’t know was she needed to be resuscitated 7 times in the lab and she actually had multiple organ failure. Every organ of hers was shutting down, her legs would need to be amputated and she had brain damage and was on full life support. That was the only thing keeping her alive.
And even now 7 months later I am still in disbelief, I still wait for her to come home everyday.
I mostly don’t feel anything, just complete isolation and emptiness and I wish I knew how to feel something, but I just don’t.
